Horsepower House

Dodge is back with their insanity of cramming their 6.2L supercharged V8 in anything they can, including their family vehicles. Introducing the newest of the Hellcat family: the Durango Hellcat, the Charger Hellcat Redeye, and the Challenger Super Stock. All three of these beasts boast over 700 horsepower and 0-60 times of less than 4 seconds.

Lets start with the Durango Hellcat. After the success of the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, it was an obvious move on Dodge’s end to take the three-row family sport SUV and give it some hell of its own. Boasting 707 horsepower, the Durango Hellcat accelerates 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, not bad for a 5,500 pound vehicle. This also makes it the fastest mass-produced SUV on the planet (for now). The Hellcat Durango will finish the quarter mile in 11.5 seconds and hit a top speed of 180 miles per hour. Still finished in the Alcantara that has been offered for years, the Durango Hellcat is still a nice place to be in the HOV lane.

Less than 2000 are expected to be built as a result of being offered only for 2021. The reason: with such a large engine, the Durango Hellcat cannot pass the 2022 emissions ratings. The vehicle come with 20-inch Pirelli tires and large brakes. Orders start later this year.

Moving on to the Charger Hellcat Redeye, Dodge has again outdone their old record. Coming in at a ground-shaking 797 horsepower, the Redeye added over 80 horsepower on top of the “average” Hellcat model. That means that you can haul yourself and your family to 203 miles per hour and 0-60 in 3.3 seconds. Seriously impressive numbers when you realize the platform for the Charger has not changed in 15 years and is able to mostly handle this power output.

The Charger features the wider fenders from the Scat Pack and Hellcat Widebody, and at full throttle will drain the fuel tank in just under 11 minutes. While burning liquid dinosaurs that quickly, the optional microsuede interior fits like a well-designed glove for the driver, providing a surprisingly comfortable interior to counter the brute force of the engine.

Finally, the rebirth of the Demon rounds off the Hellcat lineup. The Dodge Challenger Super Stock boasts an astonishing 807 horsepower to the rear wheels which rockets the car to 60 in 3.3 seconds. However, the tires are the limiting factor since they can only grip up to 168 miles per hour (the slowest of the new Hellcats). The name Super Stock comes from the type of passenger car drag racing that this car will more than likely compete in.

Compared to the Redeye, the only visible difference is the wheels and tires. Running from factory on drag radials, the Super Stock is definitely a beast, but I wouldn’t call it a sleeper since it looks so alike to the 797 horsepower Redeye. The car also uses a line lock and launch control feature for maximum smokiness and fastest acceleration. At less than $90,000 there are very few vehicles from factory that could come near this car on the strip.
